How Geothermal Works

As the seasons change from spring to winter, temperature fluctuates throughout the year. Some climates can range from blazing summers to freezing winters; Elizabethtown included. Did you know there is a fairly constant temperature, regardless of climate or season, just below the ground?

The Earth's crust absorbs 47% of the sun's heat (energy) and is retained in the ground a few feet beneath the surface. WaterFurnace geothermal systems extract this free resource with an earth loop. This innovative technology reclaims the sun's heat supplying your home or office with central heating and cooling.

Geothermal Heating

In the heating cycle, a WaterFurnace geothermal heat pump employs the earth loop system to draw the heat from the ground. With delivery through a traditional duct system, the geothermal system draws heat from the loops and distributes it as warm air. Other choices are available to use that same heat energy to provide hot water heating and radiant floor heat.

Geothermal Cooling

The heating process is reversed in the cooling mode - creating cold, conditioned air throughout the home. Instead of pulling heat from the ground, heat is extracted from the air in your home and either moved back into the earth loop, or used to preheat the water in your hot water tank.
